Our Programs

The Niagara Hindu Samaj provides a range of programs to the Niagara community. Our programs aim to enrich the life of Niagarans. Many of the  programs are supported by a grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Explore the programs we offer- there’s sure to be something of interest to you!

The Niagara Hindu Samaj reserves the right to cancel any program where enrolment is below an acceptable level.  Programs may also be cancelled before any classes begin due to other reasons beyond our control. In both situations, registrants will have the option of requesting either a credit  towards any of our other program offerings, or a refund of the fees paid. Fees cannot be refunded once a program commences and is expected to progress as scheduled.

Although unlikely,  it is possible that classes pertaining to a given program that has already commenced may be cancelled for emergency reasons. In such an event,  every effort will be made to reschedule the missed class(es). If this is not feasible, registrants will be refunded their fees on a pro-rated basis.

Hindi is widely spoken or understood in India, and is one of India’s two national languages (the other being English). The Niagara Hindu Samaj is responding to an increased interest in Hindi by offering Hindi classes to adult learners as well as elementary-aged students. Whether you wish to learn Hindi so that you can function in an Indian environment,  or understand the swashbuckling dialogues in Bollywood movies, we have a class that may well fit your needs.

The harmonium and the tabla are synonymous with Indian music. Despite being introduced by the British into India comparatively recently, the harmonium, a wind instrument, has become very popular among musicians. The tabla, a percussion instrument, serves as an almost essential accompaniment to singing. The tabla is gaining immense popularity all over the world with its pure, clear notes. Achieving proficiency in playing these instruments is something everyone can be proud of!

Learn the tabla and the harmonium with Dr. Hussain Ahmed Khan. Dr. Khan’s enormous experience in teaching the harmonium as well as the tabla at all levels is well known. We limit class sizes to roughly 5 or 6 participants, so register early! Participants will be expected to have their own instruments.

Music

India is well known for its cultural riches. Indian classical dances symbolize grace, poise, and balance. Prominent among the major classical dances of India is Bharata Natyam, arguably the oldest classical dance style that India has ever produced. It is a dance form characterized by an incredible mixture of philosophy, sculpture, music and literature.

Bharata Natyam is an energetic dance form that can be performed either solo or in a group. The dancer uses various expressive movements to depict stories from the ancient Indian texts and other sources.

Learn this intricate and intriguing dance form with Vaitheki Manickavasagar. Vaitheki has been trained in a rigorous tradition under well-known Guru Jeyanthi Shanmugalingam, and is familiar with the purest form of the dance.
